Grand Hotel Secret Tunnel

The Grand Hotel is a Taipei icon. Many dignitaries stayed there over the years including USA presidents Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton. It is stunning inside and out. For decades it had been rumored that there were secret tunnels leading from the hotel to many speculated destinations. The secret tunnels were to provide security for dignitaries staying at the hotel should an emergency arise. As I understand it there was a fire on the hotel roof in 1995. Safety inspection, because of the fire, discovered the tunnels to be true, however, the tunnels were not as long as speculated. Once the secret was out the tunnels were opened to the public for a period of time closing in 2005. As luck would have it they reopened the secret tunnel tours for the public when I visited the hotel. Although I have seen the hotel from the outside for more that 20 years this was the first time that I visited the hotel and how lucky I am to have been able to go on the secret tunnel tour.
